Cannabis, Marijuana, Weed – What’s The Difference?
Let’s get one thing straight; cannabis is the name of the plant. The type of cannabis you have (sativa, indica, ruderalis, hemp etc.,) will determine what kind of things can be made from it.
When we talk about marijuana, essentially we are talking about what is made from the buds and flowers of the cannabis plant – and weed is just another name for marijuana!
Marijuana and weed, when used in those terms, will contain a certain amount of THC meaning the user will endure a “high”.
And what about hash?
Hash comes into play when you sift the plant (buds and all), to collect the leftovers. This resin is then compressed to create a substance that is a little oily and hard.
Again, hash contains THC – even higher than that of marijuana – yet, it also has a higher CBD content and because of this the THC affect does not become as powerful.
I know the difference between cannabis and marijuana – but what is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It has non-psychoactive affects and even subdues those more psychoactive affects caused by THC.
The special thing about CBD is that, unlike other cannabinoids that only react with certain receptors in the body, this molecule can influence a variety of receptors – and not just the cannabinoid ones.
Take for example, the opioid receptors (the ones in charge of pain control). In the pharmaceutical industry, painkillers and even morphine are synthetically made to interact with this area in the brain, a job that CBD does naturally.
Although studies are still being held, the promising results of CBD could mean that this cannabinoid could be a great, natural and organic pain killer.
Scientists are also looking into the molecule as a potential anti-depressant as it also reacts with the receptors in the brain that control dopamine; which is a chemical known for motivation and reward behaviour.
So Marijuana is Cannabis?
All marijuana is cannabis – but not all cannabis is marijuana.
